Resorts World Bimini statement on staff layoffs

“While Resorts World Bimini is now open and operational, we are still in the process of recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Commercial air lift continues to only serve a small portion of our guests, and the current ferry service is limited during the Winter months due to inclement weather. As a result, we have made the hard decision to curtail staffing until a time when increased resort visitation warrants a reevaluation.

“Throughout this process, Resorts World has worked with the Minister of Labour’s office to fully comply with the Employment Act.  In addition, the names of affected individuals were shared with the Department of Labour to expedite applications for benefits at each employee’s respective places of residence..."

Yasmine Cooke named Miss Universe Bahamas 2017

Twenty-five year old, fourth year medical student from Nassau, Yasmine Cooke was crowned Miss Universe Bahamas 2017 on Sunday night at Atlantis, Paradise Island. First runner up was Tiasha Stewart of Grand Bahama Island. Second runner up was Azaria Clare, also of Grand Bahama.

When asked why she would pursue pageantry while studying medicine Yasmine responded, "The precision, refinement and dedication... As a medical student and future doctor I can take the lessons learned from pageantry into this professional arena." Yasmine is studying at the University of the West Indies...

The Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) announces that operations at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) will continue through the evening of Thursday, September 7, 2017 and that the airport will be closed on Friday, September 8, 2017 until further notice.

Following the storm and once the “All Clear” is given by the Meteorological Department and National Emergency Management Agency, all airport employees and stakeholders are expected to safely return to LPIA to assess any damage, clean up and restore the airport for the prompt resumption of operations...

Exuma Students to Participate in Youth Ambassadors Leadership Exchange in USA

Six students from L.N. Coakley High School in Exuma have been selected by U.S. Embassy Nassau to participate in the prestigious Youth Ambassadors Leadership Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State through U.S. Embassy Nassau and implemented by World Learning. World Learning is a global not-for-profit organization with educational and international development operations in more than 75 countries. It fosters global citizen-activism by connecting over 100,000 participants. The Youth Ambassadors Program brings together talented Caribbean students who are committed to improving the communities and able to represent their countries as Citizen Diplomats. The Youth Ambassadors Program with the Caribbean will be held August 7-28, in the United States. Haitian Migrants apprehended in Ragged Island

Just over 60 Haitian migrants were apprehended in the southern Bahamas on Thursday morning during a joint exercise by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Immigration authorities.

Shortly after 8:30 am, a Haitian sloop arrived offshore at Ragged Island. Defence Force and Immigration officials along with community members engaged in a joint exercise to take into custody the migrants, who were quickly located on the sparsely populated island. The undocumented migrants included 40 men, 10 women, and 14 children. The migrants will be transported to the Capital by a Defence Force patrol craft for further processing by immigration officials...
