ORG Statement: Events in The House of Assembly February 7, 2018

For the greater part of the last three weeks, The House of Assembly has been consumed with belaboring the issues surrounding comments made by the Member of Parliament for Englerston and her subsequent suspension, culminating yesterday in a debacle wherein members from both sides competed in spectacular displays of one-upmanship, leading to a litany of insults and woefully inappropriate remarks which undermined The House and the offices of those who serve it.
 
As civil society groups across the country anticipate important legislation due for table and/or debate, such as The Integrity Commission Bill, The Ombudsman Bill, Fiscal Responsibility Regulations and others...

Dubbing the bill a possible “gamechanger”, the group asserts that MPs, civil servants, private sector and the public should all be familiar with the bill and are calling for persons to read and understand the bill...

Resorts World Bimini statement on staff layoffs

“While Resorts World Bimini is now open and operational, we are still in the process of recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Commercial air lift continues to only serve a small portion of our guests, and the current ferry service is limited during the Winter months due to inclement weather. As a result, we have made the hard decision to curtail staffing until a time when increased resort visitation warrants a reevaluation.

“Throughout this process, Resorts World has worked with the Minister of Labour’s office to fully comply with the Employment Act.  In addition, the names of affected individuals were shared with the Department of Labour to expedite applications for benefits at each employee’s respective places of residence..."

Yasmine Cooke named Miss Universe Bahamas 2017

Twenty-five year old, fourth year medical student from Nassau, Yasmine Cooke was crowned Miss Universe Bahamas 2017 on Sunday night at Atlantis, Paradise Island. First runner up was Tiasha Stewart of Grand Bahama Island. Second runner up was Azaria Clare, also of Grand Bahama.

When asked why she would pursue pageantry while studying medicine Yasmine responded, "The precision, refinement and dedication... As a medical student and future doctor I can take the lessons learned from pageantry into this professional arena." Yasmine is studying at the University of the West Indies...

Operations at LPIA due to Hurricane Irma issued – September 7th, 2017 at 5:00pm

The Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) announces that operations at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) will continue through the evening of Thursday, September 7, 2017 and that the airport will be closed on Friday, September 8, 2017 until further notice.

Following the storm and once the “All Clear” is given by the Meteorological Department and National Emergency Management Agency, all airport employees and stakeholders are expected to safely return to LPIA to assess any damage, clean up and restore the airport for the prompt resumption of operations...
