Fashion Gets Ethical Down Under...


Australia could well be leading the way in the slow fashion movement. With a promise to deliver sustainable fashion to Perth on a global level by promoting and showcasing ethical designers and artists, the inaugural Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA) did just that from November 23 to 27 in Fremantle at Victoria Hall. And, it did so to rave reviews from all those in attendance.

Created by Zuhal Kuvan-Mills, the founder of Australia’s first internationally recognised organic fashion label, Green Embassy, the five-day event had over 44 designers which included 11 international designer shows...

Eco Fashion Week Australia to Highlight Environmentally Conscious Fashion

Designers who have a passion for creating a world where garments have a clean and positive story to tell are set to converge Down Under from November 23 - 27, 2017 for the inaugural Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA).  Park of the eco mindset and mandate is a "zero-waste" policy for most eco designers.  Well-known Indian designer, Shravan Kumar says he's looking forward to raising consumer awareness in this area and feels draping is one of the best ways to achieve material usage.

American designer set for Eco Fashion Week Australia

The sustainable couture fashion line, Prophetik designed by Jeff Garner of the United States will be seen on the runway at the inaugural Eco Fashion Week Austratlia taking place in Perth from
November 23 - 27, 201. The week-long event will take place in Western Australia and will feature designers who practise sustainable, ethical production, either by recycling or upcycling, or use organic and natural materials which do not leave a carbon footprint.

Founded by Perth-based Australian eco fashion designer and visual artist Zuhal Kuvan-Mills of Green Embassy, Zuhal has taken her passion for slow fashion to a new level with the creation of this first of its kind fashion event for the region. After traveling the globe and showcasing her own lines in locations as far away at Canada, Kuvan-Mills is setting her sights on promoting and showcasing Australian and international sustainable artists and designers in her beloved homeland...

Make Do and Mend – Fashion Flashback

Eco fashion takes me back to my childhood and wartime/postwar time in the UK. Dresses were taken apart and re-sewn with a bit of extra fabric creatively added, or they were made into rag rugs. Hand knitted sweaters were carefully picked undone, the yarn washed and reused for something different. There was a “rag and bone” man who took his horse drawn cart through the neighbourhoods once a month to pick up discarded items and recycle them.



“Recycling” was the way of life at that time out of necessity. But it wasn’t called recycling. Everything was cherished and re-used or repaired. There were no new items available. Brown paper bags were taken back to stores for reuse, milk bottles and pop bottles were all picked up by the delivery guy, and taken back to the dairy or pop company to be washed and reused...
